The alternator is one of the most important parts on any vehicle, because the alternator is the one in charge to supply the correct voltage needed to operate all the electrical and electronic parts on your vehicle, while at the same time recharges the battery to bring it to the correct storage capacity.
The correct voltage an alternator should produce at an engine speed of 2,000 RPM's or more is 14 volts, if you want to test the amperage output of the alternator in your vehicle but you only have a volt meter, you can still do it, all you need to do is, with the engine running, hook the voltmeter to the positive and negative terminals, turn all the accesories on like AC, headlights, radio et., the voltage output shouldn't drop below 14 volts at 2,000 rpm's or more, if it does, it is likely that the alternator is faulty.
Another problem that may happen with the alternator and the charging system is a voltage output higher than 15 volts, it this is the case, the problem will be a bad voltage regulator, in older vehicles the voltage regulator was mounted somewhere on the firewall away from the alternator, most modern alternators have the voltage regulator inside the armature, and it can only be replaced by taking the alternator apart.
