There are several styles of drive axles, every manufacturer has an unique set up for each vehicle, most older cars and old and new trucks have a straight axle system for the rear wheels, in this set up the drive axles are either bolted to the hub on full floating axle systems, or are retained by c clips inside the differential housing on semi-floating systems.

Modern front wheel drive vehicles have a different set-up, the drive axles are called CV drive axles, because each drive axle has two CV joints, one in each end, they connect the transaxle and the hub assbly on each wheel, the CV joints ,( CV = constant velocity) allow the CV drive axle to flex when the wheels are turned and when the vehicle moves up and down on bumpy roads, these drive axles are usually trouble free, but it is very important to keep an eye on the booth that covers the CV joint, it needs to be replaced as soon as it develops a tear, otherwise dirt will enter the CV joint causing damage to the bearings, the easiest way to know if your vehicle has a damaged CV joint is to turn the wheel all the way either left or right and accelarate at the same time, if you hear a constant clicking noise while you do this, your vehicle has a bad CV joint. The only way to replace it is to remove the drive axle from the vehicle and dissasemble it, you can save time by replacing the entire CV drive axle assembly with a remanufactured unit from Cardone, Crown, GCK etc, you can buy them at the parts stores, they will need your old CV drive axle as a core.

Modern 4 wheel drive pick up trucks with independent front suspension have CV drive axles that connect the transfer case to the hubs on the wheels, they need to be inspected on a regular basis for cracks or tears on the CB boots, otherwise they will be damaged in the same way the CV drive axles in front wheel drive cars do.

All sports cars are equipped with independent rear suspension, vehicles like Chevrolet Corvette, BMW, Jaguar, Mercedes Benz etc. Have CV drive axles instead of a solid rear drive axle, this allows the suspension to be tuned better to allow more agressive and comfortable driving styles. It is recomended to replace these CV drive axles with high performance units, or at least OEM replacements, otherwise, few dollars saved now can turn in to a huge expense later.
